Guide to 2 Post Auto Lift Brands and Types

If you’re an automotive enthusiast of any type, no doubt you appreciate that a 2 post auto lift is one of the handiest tools in the shop. You might be a professional mechanic who’s looking to be more time efficient while being safety conscious or a car buff who’s come to a point in life where laying on your back and rolling a transmission on a creeper no longer cuts it. If so, a 2 post lift is the solution.

This might be the first lift you’re investing in, or you might be replacing an existing lift that’s ended its lifespan or simply doesn’t have the capacity for larger vehicles. You might be expanding your facility and need additional lifts to improve capacity. You could be in the enviable position of starting from scratch and installing a 2 post heavy duty lift in the new garage you’re building.

No matter what you’re up to, you’re going to be faced with the same challenge — to select the right adjustable height 2 post car lift for your purpose.

There’s never been a better time in the automotive business to invest in a 2 post automotive lift. Your lift is the centerpiece of your work station. It’s as important as your work bench and tool caddy. Just as you take care in arranging your bench and investing in other mechanical equipment, it makes sense to approach selecting an adjustable height 2 post auto lift with the same attention to detail.

The time spent researching various brands, designs and capacities of 2 post lifts will pay off.

You’ll hear different terms when selecting an automotive lift. They’re available in 2 post models, which are the most common and versatile. You’ll also find 4 post lifts, scissor lifts, in-ground lifts, portable lifts, mobile lifts and parking lifts. To compound your selection challenge, lifts are available in symmetrical and asymmetrical design. Then you have the choice between baseplate lifts and overhead automotive lifts.

And, as with anything, your budget matters, too.

Auto lifts are expensive, but your return on investment pays back. Adjustable height 2 post lifts are the backbone of the automotive service industry — and for good reasons. Getting a vehicle off the floor and up to efficient work height reduces service time. The right height allows you to access wheels and brakes. You can also raise your vehicle high enough to walk under for oil changes and repairs to drivelines, exhaust and suspension systems.

Working in this manner saves enormous strain on your back. Bending, reaching and stretching are minimized. The ergonomic benefits of using a lift are well appreciated by every single auto buff who’s ever worked on a car, truck, van or any other type of vehicle. You name it — if it has wheels, you can be sure it’s been raised on a lift.

It’s not only professional mechanics at dealerships or specialty shops who enjoy the benefits of an adjustable height 2 post automotive lift.

2 Post Car Lifts Are Used by All Types of Automotive Enthusiasts

You’ll find 2 post lifts in shops across the nation and around the world. Lifts have made life easier for auto service engineers since the automobile was invented. Servicing is a fact of life with vehicles, and making that task easier, quicker and safer was an early priority for mechanics. Their secret tool, the auto lift, quickly found its way from small town repair shops into large service centers and home garages.

Consider the wide variety of scenarios 2 post auto lifts could be used in:

  • Auto garages: A professional garage can’t compete without using lifts. Servicing and repairs are completed much faster when using lifts. Almost all commercial garages bill according to shop time and parts used. The automotive servicing industry is a competitive business where time equates to money. To stay competitive, that savings must be passed on to the customer. In addition, to attract the best mechanics, an auto garage must provide the best equipment.
  • Classic car collectors: Collectors spend huge amounts of time tinkering with their toys. They appreciate the true value of their classic autos, just like they appreciate the value of using a 2 post lift to work on their prized possessions. To collectors, possessing an auto lift is part of their overall collection.
  • Race car owners and operators: Racers and race car owners also use 2 post automotive lifts. Servicing, repairs and modifications are part of the racing world. Owners and operators know that, to be competitive on the track, they have to be competitive in the shop. Having a lift gives racers an extra advantage in knowing they’ve inspected every part of the car before the race, from top to bottom.
  • Home mechanics: Mechanics don’t just come in big shops. Many home mechanics love their 2 post lifts. In smaller shops where space is a premium, many home mechanics select adjustable height and portable 2 post car lifts. This makes the problem of getting underneath a vehicle to fix or repair it much easier. Be aware, 2 post automotive lifts create another slight problem for home mechanics. That’s because all their friends want shop time on the lift to make their servicing work far easier.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric Lifts

By now, you’ve heard the terms “symmetric” and “asymmetric” repeatedly. If you aren’t already familiar with the difference in 2 lost lift designs, here is the simplest explanation. It’s all in the offset or angled position of the lift posts in relation to the lifting arms.

  • Symmetrical lifts are built with the two lifting posts opposite each other and meant to hold the vehicle at its center of gravity. The lifting arms are equal length and extend to the vehicle’s picking points equally. This allows a uniform lift and is the easiest and less costly lift design. The disadvantage to symmetrical lifts is that the posts interfere with door opening and make interior access challenging.
  • Asymmetrical lifts are designed with the 2 upright posts offset from the vehicle’s center of gravity. The front lifting arms are shorter than the rear and allow the posts to be further ahead in the vehicle’s profile. As an average, the picking points are located 30 percent forward and 70 percent rearward of the vehicle’s midsection. This allows easier cabin access. The disadvantage is that asymmetrical lifts can be more expensive than symmetrical lifts due to the complexity of design.

Baseplate vs. Overhead Lifts

This is the other major difference in design with 2 post automotive lists. Both baseplate and overhead lifts share common characteristics with one post serving as the “master” column and the second post acting as a “slave.” The master post is the primary structural component housing the electric motor and hydraulic pump that drives the lift. To lift equally, the opposing or secondary post receives hydraulic and electric feeds from the motor and pump.

This feed comes from an electric wire and hydraulic hose system that connects the master to the slave. With a baseplate system, the connections travel across the shop floor and are protected by a metal baseplate that can be driven over. Think of a baseplate as appearing as a “u” shape with the tops of the posts being open.

An overhead system is connected at the top of the posts like an “n”. The electrical and hydraulic feeds travel through this overhead connection and down to the slave post’s hydraulic cylinder.

There are two primary advantages to an overhead 2 post lift system. One is that the floor is not interfered with by a bumpy baseplate. The second is there’s a much stronger support for the columns with the tops being attached. The overhead support relieves stress on the posts’ anchor bolts that protrude from the concrete floor. Conversely, overhead 2 post lifts tend to be more expensive for equal lifting capacity.

Although these are the basic details on 2 post lifts, there are more factors you should know that affect your decision when selecting an automotive lift. The knowledgeable professionals at North American Auto Equipment are here to answer all your questions about car lifts and other auto supplies.
