Guide to 2 Post Auto Lift Brands and Types

If you’re an automotive enthusiast of any type, you likely know a 2 post auto lift is one of the handiest tools in the shop. You might be a professional mechanic who’s looking to be more time-efficient and safety-conscious, or a car buff who’s come to a point in life when laying on your back and rolling a transmission on a creeper no longer cuts it. If so, a 2 post lift is the solution.

This might be the first lift you’re investing in, or you might be replacing an existing lift that’s ended its life span or simply doesn’t have the capacity for larger vehicles. You could also be expanding your facility and need additional lifts to improve capacity. You might even be in the exciting position of starting from scratch and installing a heavy-duty 2 post lift in the new garage you’re building.

No matter what you’re up to, you'll be faced with the same challenge — the need to select the right adjustable height 2 post car lift for your purposes.

Where to Start When Picking the Right 2 Post Car Lift

There’s never been a better time in the automotive business to invest in a 2 post automotive lift. Your lift is the centerpiece of your workstation. It’s as important as your workbench and tool caddy. Just as you take care while arranging your bench and investing in other mechanical equipment, it makes sense to approach selecting an adjustable height 2 post auto lift with the same attention to detail.

The time spent researching various brands, designs and capacities of 2 post lifts will pay off.

You’ll hear different terms when selecting an automotive lift. They’re available in 2 post models, which are the most common and versatile. You’ll also find 4 post, scissor, in-ground, portable, mobile and parking lifts. To compound your selection challenge, lifts are available in symmetrical and asymmetrical designs. Then, you have the choice between baseplate and overhead automotive lifts.

And, as with anything, your budget matters, too.

Auto lifts are expensive, but your return on investment pays back. Adjustable height 2 post lifts are the backbone of the automotive service industry — and for good reasons. Getting a vehicle off the floor and up to efficient work height reduces service time. The right height allows you to access wheels and brakes. You can also raise your vehicle high enough to walk under for oil changes and repairs to drivelines, exhaust and suspension systems.

Working in this manner saves enormous strain on your back. Bending, reaching and stretching are minimized. The ergonomic benefits of using a lift are well appreciated by every single auto buff who’s ever worked on a car, truck, van or any other type of vehicle. You name it — if it has wheels, you can be sure it’s been raised on a lift.

Professional mechanics at dealerships or specialty shops enjoy the benefits of an adjustable height 2 post automotive lift, but so do many others. Individuals who love to repair their vehicles or customize them may want to invest in a 2 post car lift as well. The ergonomic benefits of these lifts and the way they help people efficiently work on vehicles make them one of the best features in any mechanic's garage, whether they're used for professional or personal projects.

2 Post Car Lifts Are Used by All Types of Automotive Enthusiasts

You’ll find 2 post lifts in shops across the nation and around the world. Lifts have made life easier for auto service engineers since the automobile was invented. Servicing is a fact of life with vehicles, and making that task easier, quicker and safer was an early priority for mechanics. Their secret tool, the auto lift, quickly found its way from small-town repair shops into large service centers and home garages.

Consider the wide variety of scenarios 2 post auto lifts could be used in:

  • Auto garages: A professional garage can’t compete without using lifts. Servicing and repairs are completed much faster when using lifts. Almost all commercial garages bill customers according to shop time and parts used. The automotive servicing industry is a competitive business where time equates to money. To stay competitive as an industry, companies must pass the savings on to the customer. Additionally, an auto garage must provide the best equipment to attract the best mechanics.
  • Classic car collectors: Collectors spend huge amounts of time tinkering with their toys. They appreciate the true value of their classic autos, just like they appreciate the value of using a 2 post lift to work on their prized possessions. To collectors, possessing an auto lift is part of their overall collection.
  • Racecar owners and operators: Racers and race car owners also use 2 post automotive lifts. Servicing, repairs and modifications are part of the racing world. Owners and operators know that to be competitive on the track, they also have to be competitive in the shop. Having a lift gives racers an extra advantage by letting them fully inspect every part of the car before the race, from top to bottom.
  • Home mechanics: Mechanics don’t just come in big shops. Many home mechanics love their 2 post lifts. In smaller shops where space is a premium, many home mechanics select adjustable height and portable 2 post car lifts. This makes getting underneath a vehicle to fix or repair it much easier. Be aware that 2 post automotive lifts create a slight problem for home mechanics. Once a mechanic's friends find out about the lift, they'll want to use it all the time.

We take our responsibility seriously by providing the best brands of 2 post auto lifts to our customers. We strive to ensure you’re given the best information possible when selecting a lift from excellent brands like Universalift, Bison and Atlas.

When you work with our team, we explain the ins and outs of buying a 2 post car lift and spend time familiarizing you with important lift terms like symmetrical, asymmetrical, baseplate and overhead lifts.

Universalift, Bison and Atlas are the top three 2 post auto lift brands available. North American Auto Equipment is proud to offer all of them. We're so confident in our lift equipment's quality that we stand behind every product with a full warranty. We welcome any questions you have regarding your lift purchase.

To make your decision easier, we’ve outlined our leading 2 post lifts below.

Universalift 2 Post Auto Lifts

Universalift is a top-quality brand of auto lifts that we supply. Each Universalift product is fully warrantied. We’re sure you can find the right 2 post lift from these models ranging from 7,000 pounds capacity, like the Universalift 2, up to 15,000 pounds capacity, like the 15KCD.

These lifts also offer various maximum lift heights, ranging from 72 to 77 inches. Universalift 2 post car lifts provide excellent speed, as they can lift a vehicle in 40 to 50 seconds. Additionally, you can find them at varying drive-through clearance heights, with some featuring drive-through clearances as low as 95 inches, while others have them as high as 108 inches.

Bison Brand 2 Post Auto Lifts

Bison is another excellent line of 2 post lifts that North American Auto Equipment is proud to recommend. One of the top 2 post car lifts we offer from the company is the Bison 9KAF.

This 2 post car lift has a capacity of 9,000 pounds, making it a good fit for many different cars. Its maximum lift height of 72 inches gives mechanics plenty of space to work on vehicles comfortably. Additionally, the drive-through clearance range of 95 to 106 inches is another attractive quality.

Atlas Brand 2 Post Automotive Lifts

Atlas brand lifts are the third but equally well-built and dependable category of 2 post lifts that North American Auto Equipment supplies. As options go for these 2 post car lifts, you can find a great deal of variety. The PVL-9BP model gives users a lift capacity of 9,000 pounds, perfect for cars and trucks. At the high end of the spectrum, you can purchase a PVL-15 model, which offers a 15,000-pound lift capacity. These heavy-duty lifts are perfect for mount box trucks and rugged pickups.

Atlas lifts also offer different heights, with overall heights ranging from 111 1/8 inches to 174 1/2 inches to enable buyers to find lifts fitting their ideal purposes. Models like the PVL-12 even allow users to switch the posts' height as needed, with a low overall height setting of 165 inches and a high overall setting of 177 inches.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Lifts

By now, you’ve heard the terms “symmetric” and “asymmetric” repeatedly. If you aren’t already familiar with the difference in 2 post lift designs, here is the simplest explanation. It’s all in the offset or angled position of the lift posts in relation to the lifting arms.

Learn more about the difference between these lifts below:

  • Symmetrical lifts: Symmetrical lifts are built with the two lifting posts opposite each other and hold the vehicle at its center of gravity. The lifting arms are equal length and extend to the vehicle’s picking points equally. This design allows a uniform lift and is the easiest and least costly lift design. The disadvantage to symmetrical lifts is that the posts interfere with door opening and make interior access challenging.
  • Asymmetrical lifts: Asymmetrical lifts are designed with the 2 upright posts offset from the vehicle’s center of gravity. The front lifting arms are shorter than the rear and allow the posts to be further ahead in the vehicle’s profile. As an average, the picking points are located 30% forward and 70% rearward of the vehicle’s midsection. This arrangement allows for easier cabin access. The disadvantage is that asymmetrical lifts can be more expensive than symmetrical models due to the design's complexity.

Baseplate vs. Overhead Lifts

Baseplate vs. overhead designs is the other primary way 2 post car lifts can differ from one another. As you look for a 2 post car lift that fits your needs, you may want to know more about how these types of lifts work and how they differ.

Common Characteristics of Both Posts

Both baseplate and overhead lifts share common characteristics. One post serves as the powered column with the power unit attached and the second post acts as the "off" column, which doesn't have a power unit. The powered post is the primary structural component housing the electric motor and hydraulic pump that drives the lift.

To lift equally, the opposing or secondary post receives hydraulic and electric feeds from the motor and pump. This feed comes from an electric wire and hydraulic hose system that connects the powered post to the off post.

How a Baseplate Works

With a baseplate system, the connections travel across the shop floor and are protected by a metal baseplate that can be driven over. Think of a baseplate as appearing as a U shape with the tops of the posts being open.

How an Overhead Works

An overhead system connects at the top of the posts like the letter N. The electrical and hydraulic feeds travel through this overhead connection and down to the off post’s hydraulic cylinder.

Why Choose an Overhead Lift Instead of a Baseplate Lift?

There are two primary advantages to an overhead 2 post lift system. One is that the floor is not interfered with by a bumpy baseplate. The second is there’s much stronger support for the columns with the tops being attached. The overhead support relieves stress on the posts’ anchor bolts that protrude from the concrete floor. As a result of the stronger support, overhead 2 post car lifts tend to be more expensive for equal lifting capacity.
